Unfolding Space, conceived by Julieta Aguilera, is an immersive and malleable environment designed for the CAVE virtual reality theater. In this interactive experience, body gestures have the power to alter the structure of the space surrounding the user, providing a unique sensory journey. The iPad and iPhone versions of the piece offer users a dynamic glimpse into this captivating world. Conversely, the CAVE version grants participants the ability to navigate through an infinite grid of tesseracts.
Unfolding Space invites users to engage with a three-dimensional shadow of a four-dimensional textured grid, unveiling layers of complexity through their movements and gestures. Traversing this fluid grid simulates the sensation of navigating a labyrinth that continuously shifts, opening and closing its passageways unpredictably. This dynamic environment ensures that viewers are never confined, offering an interactive experience where mastery of form leads to newfound pathways.
The concept behind Unfolding Space delves into our cognitive processes of assimilating physical spaces into mental realms. This intellectual exploration draws inspiration from various historical disciplines including architecture, art, and mathematics such as Gaudi's architectural marvels, Japanese garden design, Polynesian navigation techniques, religious symbolism, and knot theory. Julieta Aguilera's vision was sparked by her mother's dream of being entrapped in a labyrinth, driving her to recreate this evocative landscape while empowering users to navigate their way through its intricate designs.
